Book Introduction: The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches originated in the ancient period of the Yellow Emperor. The earliest record was the scripts on the oracle bone of the Shang Dynasty which used for recording dates. Later, they evolved into a unique calendar for recording years, months and days, which is still in use today without interruption. The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches are also widely used in ancient astronomy, ancient Chinese medicine, Yin-Yang theory, geomancy, divination, prediction science and so on. Chinese characters are the ancient hieroglyphic characters best preserved and still in use in the world, being a major internal cause for the continuous inheritance of the Chinese civilization. The original meanings and logical relationship of Chinese characters can be understood naturally from the shapes of the ancient Chinese characters of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. The author of this book has been practicing painting and calligraphy since childhood and has been engaged in architecture and interior design for a long time. During his in-depth study of Feng shui, prediction science and calligraphy, he has discovered the original meanings of the ancient Chinese characters for the ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches, namely, "the life cycle of the universal tree and the earthly plants", including the universe of matter and consciousness, derived from the universal tree culture widespread in each civilization and religion in the world.
